The best way to determine if your soil needs lime is to have it tested. Most county extension offices offer inexpensive soil testing services. They’ll analyze your soil’s pH level and make a recommendation on how much lime, if any, you should apply. Generally, if your soil pH is below 6.0, it’s considered acidic and may benefit from liming. However, different plants have different pH preferences. Blueberries and azaleas, for example, prefer acidic soil. Check with Penn State Extension for guidance on ideal pH ranges for the plants you’re growing. Visual signs of soil acidity include moss growth, yellowing plants, and poor growth.
