Proper application is key for lime to be effective. First, have your soil tested to determine how much lime is needed – too little won’t raise pH enough, while too much can make soil overly alkaline. According to Oregon State University Extension, lime should be spread evenly over the soil surface, then tilled or worked into the top 6-8 inches of soil. The best times are fall or early spring when the ground isn’t frozen. Water the area well after application. For lawns, lime can be applied with a spreader. Retest soil pH yearly, as lime’s effects are temporary and reapplication may be needed.
