There are no legal exceptions that allow for farming dogs for food or commercial purposes in the United States. Dogs are classified as companion animals under animal cruelty laws in all 50 states. These laws protect dogs from being raised in conditions that cause unjustified pain, suffering, or distress. According to the Animal Legal & Historical Center, there are no exemptions in state laws that would permit the farming of dogs for their meat, fur, or other products. The only legal exceptions involve using dogs for legal activities like hunting, herding, or service work.
